Remodeling your master bathroom is always tricky, because – unless you are seriously RICH – you probably can’t afford to do everything that you would like to. Furthermore, remodeling a master bathroom – or any bathroom for that matter – is something that you may only do two or three times in a lifetime. You are going to have to live with your decisions for 15 or 20 years, unless, of course, you move house, and have sufficient finances to do it all over again.
Considerable Time On The Planning Stage
In order to get it right, therefore, you have to spend considerable time on the planning stage. We can’t emphasize this enough. It would not be unwise to spend at least three months – and preferably six – looking at bathroom designs in magazines, checking out bathtubs, showers, faucets, toilets, linen cupboards, sink vanities, and more. As you go, make notes, because you don’t want to leave out something that you saw and liked, and forget it when it comes to time to make the final decision.
It’s very much like making a shopping list for the weekend groceries. If you are anything like us, if it’s not on the list, you’ll get back home without it.
Not Just A Place For A Shower Or A Bath
The master bathroom is not just a place to have a shower or bath. It’s a place where you can have a soak and unwind at the end of a tiring day, listen to some music, watch TV, and whatever else takes your fancy. You might even take a shower or bath with your significant other, so it is a room where you can enjoy yourself and chill out, as well as a room where you grab a quick shower before dashing off to work. It serves both functions – or at least, it can - provided you plan it wisely in the first place.
There are a ton of things to consider. For instance, how many adults will use this bathroom at the same time? Do you need a single sink vanity, a double, or two singles? Are there enough electrical outlets? Do you need more lighting? How much storage do you need? How much counter space do you want? Would you like to install underfloor heating? (That is a serious luxury that need not cost a lot in the overall scheme of things).
Do you need a bigger shower than you already have? Most homeowners with homes over 20 years old say that their shower is not big enough. Certainly, not big enough for two. The same thing applies to the bathtub.
If you have a big enough area, could you even find room for a sauna? It’s a thought.
